Two decades ago, on March 29th, 2006, the Green Lantern mythos underwent a profound transformation. The creation of the Sinestro Corps by the iconic villain not only introduced the greatest threat to the Green Lantern Corps but also elevated the entire DC Universe.
The Rise of the Fear-Fueled Corps
Hal Jordan, known for his immense willpower and ability to conjure anything with his Power Ring, has long been a central figure in the intergalactic peacekeeping Green Lantern Corps. For 65 years, he has battled his former mentor, Sinestro, the fallen Green Lantern.
Sinestro wields a Yellow Lantern Ring, powered by the emotion of fear, making him a persistent adversary. The pivotal moment arrived when Sinestro formalized his opposition, creating a force designed to rival the Green Lanterns.
The First Recruitment
While a specific issue from that time focused on Hal Jordan managing Earth's border issues, the true action unfolded elsewhere. In Space Sector 674, the vicious alien Arkillo was slaughtering his foes.
As Arkillo consumed a victim, a yellow light appeared, summoning him. A Yellow Lantern Ring recognized his capacity to instill great fear, formally welcoming him into what became one of the most powerful supervillain teams: the Sinestro Corps.
A Complex Villain and Radical Philosophy
The formation of his own Corps was a logical evolution for Sinestro's character. With thousands of followers wielding Yellow Lantern Rings, he finally possessed the numbers to conquer the universe through a regime built on fear.
This development evolved Sinestro from a simple conqueror into a more complex villain defined by a dark, twisted philosophy. The Sinestro Corps serves as the Green Lantern Corps' polar opposite, taking their heroic mission to its most extreme conclusion.
The Worst of the Worst
The Green Lantern Corps comprises righteous beings dedicated to protecting the innocent. Consequently, its evil counterpart recruited some of the universe's most terrifying criminals and monsters.
- Recruits included terrorists, cannibals, serial killers, tyrants, and bloodthirsty beasts.
- Notable supervillains like Scarecrow, Mongul Jr., Superboy Prime, and the Anti-Monitor have temporarily joined.
Sinestro guides this collective sadism and cruelty with the singular goal of annihilating the Green Lanterns. Despite their methods, both Corps claim to desire order and protection for people.
Peace Through Tyranny
The Green Lantern Corps intervenes in disputes but respects autonomy and never governs. In stark contrast, Sinestro believes the universe is only safe if freedom is stripped away, promoting peace through tyranny and fear.
This dynamic forces nuanced explorations of security and law enforcement, often pushing the Green Lantern Corps past its ethical boundaries just to survive. The debut also introduced fan-favorite characters like Arkillo and Lyssa Drak.
Expanding the Emotional Spectrum
When DC Comics debuted the Sinestro Corps in 2006, it did more than create an evil mirror team. It opened the door for DC to introduce numerous other Lantern Corps based on the entire emotional light spectrum.
The Sinestro Corps was the first group to deeply examine emotion-powered rings, unlike previous concepts. This success led to the introduction of other Corps:
- The rage-fueled Red Lanterns.
- The hopeful Blue Lanterns.
- The greedy Orange Lanterns.
- The compassionate Indigo Tribe.
- The Star Sapphire Corps, powered by love.
These new groups draw power from the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum, the origin point for all universal emotions. Characters such as Atrocitus, Larfleeze, and Saint Walker emerged from these new narratives.
The Spectrum Culminates in Life and Death
Among these Corps, the Black Lanterns, fueled by death and the absence of emotion, stand as the most powerful. Led by Nekron, they were the primary antagonists of an iconic DC storyline.
That event saw long-dead characters return and the other Corps unite. It also introduced the White Lanterns, the embodiments of life and the culmination of the entire spectrum, during the aftermath.
None of these universe-altering storylines or diverse Corps would exist without the Sinestro Corps' initial success. New groups, like the Ultraviolet and Sorrow Lanterns, continue to emerge, examining psychology, justice, and existence, breathing new life into the Green Lantern franchise.
