San Francisco Manslaughter Case: Suspect Released on Bail
A week after the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Samantha Emge, 25-year-old Nation Wood appeared in court on Wednesday regarding the incident. The shooting occurred at their home in San Francisco’s Sunset District on Tuesday, March 24.
Details of the Court Appearance
Wood appeared via Zoom from a hospital mental health unit, where he is undergoing psychiatric evaluation. He was released on $300,000 bail, posted by his family. Paula Canny, Wood’s attorney, stated, “He is on electronic monitoring… All that he is going to do.”
Attorney's Concerns and DA's Statement
Canny expressed concern for Wood’s well-being, stating, “We don't want to further compound this horrible tragedy by him ending his own life.” San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins commented after the court appearance, noting that given the involuntary manslaughter charge and the ongoing investigation, the release was not unexpected. She stated the current information suggests the death was not intentional.
The Incident and Investigation
According to Wood’s attorney, the couple had recently moved in together and had just finished their first meal at the home when the incident occurred. At 10:43 p.m., the San Francisco Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot wound.
Officers found Samantha Emge suffering from a gunshot wound and provided aid. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators report a bullet went through a wall and struck Emge while she was showering.
Background Information on the Individuals
Both Samantha Emge and Nation Wood graduated from San Francisco State University in 2025. Emge worked as a design assistant at an Interior Design studio in San Francisco, though her employer declined to comment. Wood was reportedly planning to join the National Guard.
Next Steps in the Legal Process
Wood has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Emge’s family has declined to comment at this time. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 15.
