Graham Encourages De-escalation in Iran Conflict
South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that he has actively encouraged President Donald Trump to pursue peace and begin to "wind down" the ongoing conflict in Iran. This advice came following recent statements made by the President regarding consequences for Tehran.
Senator Graham shared details of his counsel to the President via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He mentioned having a "very good discussion with @POTUS" about the situation.
Support for Diplomatic Resolution
Graham expressed his backing for diplomatic initiatives aimed at concluding the conflict. He emphasized that any resolution must align with established U.S. military objectives. However, he noted the inherent difficulty in such negotiations, stating, "it takes two to tango."
The Senator concluded his message with encouragement for the President's approach. He urged the President to "Keep it up Mr President." Graham called for a dual focus: to "Wind down the war and wind up efforts for an historic peace deal."
Contrasting Views on Troop Deployment
Graham's comments regarding military engagement drew sharp criticism from Representative Nancy Mace. Mace strongly condemned Graham's perceived attitude toward military personnel deployment.
Mace specifically targeted Graham's rhetoric concerning the potential commitment of U.S. troops. She stated, "I don’t want to hear one word from a guy with no kids, desperately sending our sons and daughters into war on the ground in Iran."
During a Fox News interview, Graham addressed the need for regional support in the Middle East. He stated, "I am going back to South Carolina, I am asking them to send their sons and daughters to the Mideast." He further implored allies to take ownership of the conflict, saying, "What I want you to do in the Mideast, my friends in Saudi Arabia and other places, step forward and say this is my fight too.”
In response to Graham's remarks, Mace reiterated her strong disapproval on X. She wrote, “I am deeply upset at the lack of respect for life Senator Lindsey Graham is displaying when talking about our troops.” She concluded her critique by asserting, “He is acting as if they are expendable cattle.”
