A security guard at a Bahamas boatyard has described the condition of Brian Hooker, the husband of a missing American woman, after he was found ashore. Edward Smith, an employee at Marsh Harbour Boatyards, recounted that Hooker appeared extremely thirsty and exhausted upon their encounter.
Encounter at the Boatyard
Smith stated he was alerted by a colleague to a man who had stumbled onto the property. This man, later identified as Brian Hooker, was reportedly speaking about a key and a woman. Hooker, 58, is currently in custody in Freeport, Bahamas, and has told authorities that his wife, Lynette Hooker, fell from their dinghy.
The incident allegedly occurred as they were returning to their yacht from a bar in Hope Town. Smith noted that Hooker seemed more worn out than suspicious, immediately asking for water. When asked about his wife, Hooker claimed she was in the water.
Questions About the Timeline
Smith expressed surprise when Hooker mentioned his wife fell overboard around 7 p.m., questioning the time lapse before seeking assistance. The Hookers had been at the Abaco Inn restaurant in Hope Town earlier that Saturday evening, April 4.
Hooker's Account of Events
According to Smith, Hooker explained that they were leaving the bar when they encountered rough weather. He stated that strong winds caused their boat to drift, and he lost sight of his wife. Hooker claimed Lynette was last seen swimming toward Hope Town with a yellow bag, similar to one he was wearing when found.
Hooker also stated he attempted to signal for help using flares, but two boats passed without stopping. Smith contacted the police, who arrived around 5 a.m. Hooker was still speaking with them when Smith’s shift ended at 7 a.m.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not charged Hooker with a crime, and he maintains Lynette's fall was accidental. He is being questioned in connection with the Bahamian crime of 'causing harm resulting in death'. Bahamian law allows for detention without charges for 48 hours, which can be extended.
The deadline for Hooker's release was extended, though he could be freed earlier if no charges are filed. Police have returned to the boatyard as part of their investigation. A source indicated that authorities are actively searching for Lynette's body near Hope Town.
Lynette Hooker’s daughter has called for a full investigation, citing ‘prior issues’. The circumstances surrounding Lynette Hooker’s disappearance remain unclear as the police investigation continues.
