The Incident Unfolds
Investigators say Elisio Melendez approached a man waiting for a northbound train from behind and attempted to shove him onto the tracks as a train entered the station. Prosecutors state the attack appeared deliberate, noting Melendez “carefully timed his assault” according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
The victim managed to avoid falling onto the tracks, but authorities say Melendez attempted to push him a second time before fleeing the scene.
Arrest and Investigation
The King County Sheriff’s Office praised the work of Sound Transit deputies in apprehending a “dangerous person.” Investigators used surveillance footage and “very good detective work” to locate Melendez at a nearby mental health community center where he resided.
On March 24, investigators identified Melendez with the help of a facility employee and recovered clothing matching the suspect’s attire from his room. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the King County Correctional Facility on a $750,000 bail.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Formal charges of attempted second-degree murder were filed on March 26, and the case remains ongoing. King County prosecutors have initiated a court-ordered competency evaluation to determine if Melendez is able to understand the charges and assist in his defense.
Prior Legal History
Prosecutors revealed that Melendez was previously charged in a 2019 domestic violence assault case. However, he was found incompetent to stand trial and not restorable after multiple treatment periods, leading to the case’s dismissal in February 2021.
Following the dismissal, Melendez was placed under civil commitment at Western State Hospital until January 2022, when he was released to a less restrictive setting. Prosecutors emphasized that a competency evaluation does not automatically lead to dropped charges.
Investigation Continues
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigators are still determining if the victim was specifically targeted. The case is currently under investigation.
