The Seattle Mariners have made a significant commitment to their future by signing top prospect Colt Emerson to an eight-year, $95 million contract. This deal, which is currently pending a physical, marks a historic milestone in Major League Baseball.

The agreement represents the largest contract ever awarded to a player without any MLB service time. It surpasses the previous record set by Jackson Chourio, who signed an eight-year, $82 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2023 Winter Meetings.

Contract Details and Potential Value

The contract structure is designed to secure Emerson for the long term while providing flexibility. The deal includes:

  • A full no-trade clause.
  • A ninth-year club option.
  • Incentives and escalators that could increase the total value to over $130 million.

Scouting Report and Development

Selected in the first round of the 2023 draft, the 20-year-old Emerson is widely regarded as one of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues. By the conclusion of 2025, he had advanced to Triple-A Tacoma, where he recorded a 1.000 OPS, including five hits and a home run during a six-game stint.

Beyond his hitting prowess, Emerson has demonstrated strong defensive capabilities. He has also taken repetitions at third base, offering the Mariners additional roster versatility. Emerson is slated to begin the upcoming season with Triple-A Tacoma.

The Path to the Major Leagues

The organization views Emerson as the eventual successor to veteran shortstop J.P. Crawford. With Crawford set to enter the open market following the current season, Emerson is positioned to take over the franchise shortstop role.

This strategy of signing prospects early is not unprecedented for the Mariners. In 2019, the team signed Evan White to a six-year, $24 million extension before he reached Triple-A. While White earned a Gold Glove in 2020, his tenure was ultimately impacted by injuries, leading to his departure from the majors two years later.
