Scott LoMurray Recognized on TIME100 Health 2025 List
Scott LoMurray, the Chief Executive Officer of Sources of Strength, has earned a spot on the prestigious TIME100 Health 2025 list. This recognition highlights his organization's innovative approach to youth well-being.
LoMurray emphasizes a proactive philosophy over reacting to crises. He stated, “Our vision is to empower a well world. We really feel like wellness is the goal, health is the goal, and then prevention is an outcome of that.”
Sources of Strength's Nationwide School Partnership
Sources of Strength collaborates with hundreds of elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the United States. The specific educational programming is adapted to suit the developmental stages of the students involved.
Empowering Peer Leaders for Resilience
In secondary schools, the core strategy involves training peer leaders to support their classmates. These leaders focus on building resilience and strengthening social connections among students.
Training emphasizes increasing protective factors through healthy activities. These activities include journaling, exercising, and reading, which serve as constructive outlets for students.
The Role of Peer Connectors, Not Therapists
LoMurray is careful to define the boundaries of the peer leader role. “Our students aren’t junior psychologists who are just supposed to solve and fix all of their friends’ problems,” LoMurray clarified.
Instead, he defines them as “connectors who help when they see that somebody's struggling.” This involves checking in with withdrawn classmates in a caring manner and noting observable changes in behavior.
Focusing on Prevention and Cultivating Life
The training equips teens to intervene early, aiming to prevent students from reaching severe distress. This early intervention is a key component of their preventative model.
LoMurray noted a broader shift in focus for the field. “As a field, we spend a lot of time talking about the leading causes of death,” he observed. He concluded, “We’re really trying to spend energy cultivating the leading causes of life.”
