Holiday Closures in San Diego
Most San Diego city and county offices, services, and facilities will be closed this Tuesday in observance of Farmworkers Day. While administrative offices are shuttered, public safety services and emergency animal control will continue to operate as normal.
Background on the Holiday
The state of California recently renamed the March 31 holiday, which was previously dedicated to César Chávez. This change follows an investigation by the New York Times published earlier this month, which contained allegations that Chávez sexually assaulted female followers as young as 12 during the 1970s and raped United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta in 1966.
Impact on City Services
The following city facilities and services will be unavailable on Tuesday:
- All swimming pools and recreation centers.
- Public buildings in Balboa Park, including the Municipal Gym, Morley Field, the Botanical Building, and the Balboa Park Activity Center.
- Parks and Recreation Department offices, including the Open Space, Permit Center, and Maintenance Assessment District offices.
- The Development Services Department office.
- Your Safe Place – A Family Justice Center.
- Environmental Services Department customer service phone lines.
- Dog off-leash areas.
City officials noted that residents using private trash haulers should verify holiday service schedules with their providers. Additionally, the delivery of new gray trash bins and light blue recycling bins will continue as scheduled.
Parking Enforcement Updates
Parking meters, street parking time restrictions, yellow zones, short-term green zones, and one-to-two-hour time parking zones will not be enforced on Tuesday. However, the city emphasized that all other parking violations will still be enforced. Regulations on Port of San Diego properties and in other municipalities may vary.
County Facility Status
San Diego County has confirmed that animal shelters, health clinics, family resource centers, library branches, and public offices will be closed for the holiday. While camping reservations remain available online, the Department of Parks and Recreation’s reservation phone line will not be staffed on Tuesday.
