Sign-Stealing Dispute Resolved
A previous conflict between Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has been resolved, Saleh announced this week. The disagreement stemmed from accusations related to sign-stealing practices.
The Origin of the Conflict
The initial tension arose following a Week 4 game last season between Saleh’s former team, the San Francisco 49ers, and Coen’s Jaguars. Prior to the matchup, Saleh complimented Coen’s staff, stating they were adept at legal “sign-stealing.”
Saleh's Initial Comments
Saleh explained at the time, “They’ve got legally, a really advanced signal-stealing type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation.” This remark sparked a heated exchange after the game.
Post-Game Confrontation
Video footage showed Coen confronting Saleh, telling him to “Keep my name out of your mouth.” Saleh responded in kind, but later clarified that his initial comments were intended as a compliment and he had chosen his words poorly.
Coaches Now on Good Terms
During the NFL’s annual league meetings, Saleh stated, “We’re good. I know the NFL probably wants more of a story, but there’s no story. I have an appreciation for Liam.” He reiterated that he “used the wrong word” when attempting to praise Coen, but that the issue is now resolved.
Coen's Perspective
Coen echoed Saleh’s sentiment, saying, “we all respect what we’re doing and how we’re doing it in different ways.”
Divisional Rivals
Despite resolving their differences, Saleh and Coen will now face each other as divisional rivals. Saleh was hired as the Titans head coach in January, placing him in the same division as Coen and the Jaguars.
