Russia’s Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that its forces have taken complete control of the Luhansk region in Ukraine. This claim, however, was immediately disputed by Ukrainian officials.

Russian Claims and Ukrainian Rebuttal

“Units of the Group of Forces West have completed the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated. Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for Ukraine's Joint Forces grouping, countered this assertion, stating, “Unfortunately, we only hold small patches there, but those positions have been held by 3rd brigade for a long time.”

Past Discrepancies and Strategic Context

Ukrainian officials have previously suggested that Moscow exaggerates battlefield successes to influence U.S. negotiations, portraying a Russian victory as inevitable. Russia illegally annexed Luhansk, along with Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, in September 2022, though full control remained elusive.

Upcoming US Envoy Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to hold a video conference with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner later Wednesday. The discussion will focus on the potential for further trilateral negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Continued Fighting and Civilian Impact

The situation on the frontline remains tense, with Russia attempting to intensify its assault activity, according to Zelenskyy via X. The Institute for the Study of War reports that Ukrainian tactics are disrupting Russian advances. The conflict continues to inflict a heavy toll on Ukrainian civilians, with the United Nations reporting over 15,000 deaths to date.

Recent Attacks and Drone Warfare

A Russian drone strike on Wednesday killed four people in the Cherkasy region. Attacks also damaged infrastructure in western Ukraine, near the Polish border, including an industrial facility and a postal sorting center in Lutsk. Ukraine’s air force reported downing 298 drones, primarily Iranian-designed Shahed drones, during overnight attacks.

International Cooperation

Zelenskyy also stated on X that Ukraine is actively collaborating with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar amidst the broader Middle East conflict.
