Russia Claims Control of Luhansk Region
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated on Wednesday that its forces have taken complete control of the Luhansk region in Ukraine. The ministry announced that “Units of the Group of Forces West have completed the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic.”
Kyiv Disputes Russian Claims
However, Ukraine disputes Russia’s assertion. Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Joint Forces grouping, stated that Ukrainian forces still hold small areas within the region. “Unfortunately, we only hold small patches there, but those positions have been held by 3rd brigade for a long time,” Trehubov told the Associated Press.
History of Disputed Claims
Ukrainian officials have previously accused Moscow of making false claims regarding territorial advances. They suggest these claims are intended to influence U.S. negotiators and portray a Russian victory as inevitable.
Upcoming US Talks
The announcement comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares for a video call with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The discussion will focus on the possibility of further trilateral negotiations to address the ongoing conflict.
Russian Annexation and Demands
Russia illegally annexed Luhansk, along with the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, in September 2022, though it has not maintained full control. President Vladimir Putin has demanded that Ukrainian troops withdraw from these four regions as a prerequisite for a peace agreement.
Ongoing Conflict and Civilian Impact
The Institute for the Study of War reports that Ukrainian tactics are disrupting Russian advances. The conflict, now in its fifth year, continues to take a significant toll on Ukrainian civilians. The United Nations reports over 15,000 civilian deaths to date.
Recent Attacks
On Wednesday, a Russian drone strike in the Cherkasy region killed four people, according to regional governor Ihor Taburets. Drones also caused damage in western Ukraine, including an industrial facility in Lutsk and a postal sorting center. Ukraine’s air force reported downing 298 drones in overnight attacks.
International Cooperation
Zelenskyy stated on X that Ukraine is actively cooperating with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar amidst the Middle East conflict.
