Orioles Defeat Rangers in Historic Game

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Texas Rangers 8-3 on Wednesday, with the game concluding on the first-ever game-ending call made by an automated ball-strike system, often referred to as a “robot umpire.” This pivotal call secured a save for Orioles pitcher Albert Suárez, his first in nine years.

Controversial Final Call

The decisive moment occurred with a 1-2 count to Rangers batter Evan Carter. A fastball on the outside corner was initially called a ball by plate umpire Manny Gonzalez. However, Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo challenged the call. After a 13-second review, the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) determined the pitch clipped the strike zone.

Suárez Earns Rare Save

Following the confirmation, Gonzalez announced the strike, ending the game. Suárez, who pitched three innings allowing one run, earned his first save since August 6, 2017, when he played for the San Francisco Giants against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was embraced by Basallo on the mound after the call.

Offensive Highlights for Baltimore

Home Runs Power Orioles Offense

Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers both hit home runs for the Orioles. Basallo’s drive traveled 437 feet to center field, hitting the batter’s eye. Beavers added a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Solid Pitching from Rogers

Trevor Rogers delivered a strong performance, pitching six innings and allowing only two runs and six hits. This helped Baltimore avoid a three-game sweep by the Rangers.

Rangers Struggle on the Road

The Rangers saw contributions from Leody Taveras, Jeremiah Jackson, and Taylor Ward, each driving in two runs. However, Nathan Eovaldi struggled, allowing six runs and eight hits in just four-plus innings. Corey Seager hit a home run for Texas.

Orioles Roster Moves

Eflin to Injured List

The Orioles placed pitcher Zach Eflin on the injured list due to elbow discomfort. To fill the roster spot, the team called up right-hander Albert Suárez, who ultimately secured the save.

Looking Ahead

Both teams have a day off on Thursday. The Texas Rangers will host the Cincinnati Reds in their home opener on Friday, starting MacKenzie Gore. The Baltimore Orioles will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates, with Kyle Bradish on the mound against Mitch Keller.
