The men were sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court after being convicted of multiple offences including rape, conspiracy to traffic, and supplying cannabis. The case has sparked calls for a long-awaited inquiry into England's grooming gangs to be expanded to Wales. Gang Members and SentencesMustafa Iqbal, 43, a takeaway delivery driver, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two girls. Mohamed Usman Arshad, 36, who ran what was once described as the friendliest cafe in Rhyl, was given 19 years for raping one of the victims. Ziaullah Badshah, 25, received 17 years for raping the same girl. Jaswinder Singh, 61, was sentenced to eight years for conspiracy to traffic and supplying cannabis. Sarah Gray, 53, a drug addict, allowed her home to be used for sexual abuse and tried to destroy evidence; she was convicted alongside the four men.Abuse Began in 2022 in RhylThe grooming began in 2022 when Iqbal met two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, in Rhyl. He took them to his address, where they were later joined by Badshah and Arshad. There, the girls were given vodka and cannabis. They were then subjected to weeks of sexual abuse in cars, houses, and business premises. A third teenager, aged 16, contacted Iqbal looking to buy drugs and was raped multiple times over a three-month period. Iqbal handcuffed her before having sex with her at Gray's house in the nearby village of Gronant. Singh drove the victims around Rhyl and took one nearly 250 miles to London to get a fake passport so she could go clubbing. He told her to pretend she was his 22-year-old carer to avoid arousing suspicions that he was part of an Asian grooming gang.Arrests and Police FailuresDespite initial arrests in 2022, police failed to take action against the gang, with crucial mobile phone evidence not accessed. During the investigation, Badshah, who was granted asylum after leaving Pakistan as a child, tried to blame the girls' parents, telling detectives that if you cannot look after your kids, do not have babies. Arshad told interviewing officers it was not like a grooming thing, before confessing his actions were wrong and disgusting. Even after being arrested, Iqbal recorded himself coaching one of the victims on how to avoid CCTV cameras.The gang referred to the victims using Urdu slang for prostitutes, and Arshad and Iqbal swapped vile text messages arguing about one of the girls being passed to another man for sex. All the victims were known to local social services. The case comes after two men were jailed for grooming and exploiting a teenage girl in Cardiff.
