During the third game of the season, Vásquez tossed six shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers, allowing only two hits and recording eight strikeouts to help the Padres salvage the series.

Velocity Surge Drives Success

Vásquez has been drawing attention throughout the spring due to a noticeable increase in his pitch velocity. This upward trend began late last season, when he reached 97 mph during a September start.

The results were on full display against the Tigers, where he threw a 97.8 mph sinker. His overall pitch average rose to 95.5 mph, a significant jump from his 93.1 mph average last season. Additionally, his fastball velocity climbed from 93.5 mph to 95 mph.

Consistent Improvement and Results

When asked about his recent success, Vásquez attributed his performance to the hard work he has put into his craft. His recent track record is impressive, as he has posted four quality starts and a 1.98 ERA over his last five appearances dating back to September 6.

His strikeout rate has also seen a dramatic improvement. Over his last five starts, Vásquez has maintained a 24.5% strikeout rate, a substantial increase from the 13% rate he recorded over 42 starts between the start of the 2024 season and last August.

Vásquez has emerged as a bright spot for the San Diego pitching staff. After posting a 3.84 ERA across 28 games last season, the right-hander is expected to play a central role in the team's rotation moving forward.
