Los Angeles Rams star receiver Puka Nacua has voluntarily checked himself into a rehabilitation facility, his attorney confirmed Wednesday. This decision comes amid recent off-field incidents, including allegations detailed in a newly filed civil lawsuit.
Civil Lawsuit Details
Last week, a woman filed a civil lawsuit against Nacua, alleging that he made an antisemitic statement during a New Year’s Eve dinner and subsequently bit her shoulder. Prior to the lawsuit’s filing, attorney Levi McCathern stated that Nacua denied the allegations and would “pursue all available legal remedies in response to these false and damaging statements.”
Voluntary Entry into Rehab
According to reports from the California Post, Nacua entered a rehab facility in Malibu. McCathern released a statement to The Times, explaining that Nacua “voluntarily entered a private facility to focus on his health, personal growth, and overall development — and I’m really proud of him for doing that ahead of his upcoming season.”
Commitment to Growth
McCathern further emphasized Nacua’s commitment to using this time constructively to return in the best possible condition, both personally and professionally, to continue contributing to his team. The Rams organization declined to comment on the matter.
Team Support and Offseason Plans
Nacua is expected to complete the program in time to participate in the Rams’ organized team activities, which begin after the start of offseason workouts on April 20th. McCathern noted Nacua’s gratitude for the support received from his family, friends, Coach Sean McVay, and teammates.
Previous Incidents
This lawsuit is the latest in a series of off-field situations for the fourth-year pro. In December, Nacua faced criticism for an antisemitic gesture during a livestream and later received a $25,000 fine from the NFL for criticizing officials in a social media post following a game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Contract Considerations
Despite these issues, Nacua, 24, had a breakout season in 2023, leading the NFL with 129 receptions and earning All-Pro honors. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible for an extension potentially worth up to $120 million in guarantees. Rams General Manager Les Snead and COO Tony Pastoors have indicated that on-field performance isn’t the sole factor in contract extension decisions.
Both McVay and Snead have publicly expressed their trust in Nacua and his commitment to growth as a person and player.
