Reports from a European intelligence agency suggest Vladimir Putin is operating under heightened fear of a potential coup or assassination. This concern stems from a perceived risk of destabilization, with former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu identified as a key figure potentially involved.

The Kremlin has responded by significantly increasing Putin’s personal security, implementing extensive surveillance measures on close staff, and restricting their movements. These actions follow a series of assassinations targeting high-ranking Russian military officials, most recently the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in December, which sparked internal conflict within Russia’s security establishment.

The report details a ‘high alert’ status within the government since March 2026, specifically regarding the possibility of a plot against the president, with concerns about the use of drones in a potential assassination.
