Prime Video Superhero Shows Rival Marvel and DC, Led by The Boys Prime Video's superhero lineup, including The Boys, Gen V, The Tick and Invincible, stands out against Marvel and DC TV shows with mature stories and standalone worlds. Prime Video has built a superhero catalog that stands apart from the Marvel and DC universes, with four shows that have drawn praise for their storytelling and mature tone: The Boys, Gen V, The Tick and Invincible. The streaming service also carries two Marvel and DC titles, Batman: Caped Crusader and Spider-Noir, showing that the platform covers both original and licensed superhero content. The superhero genre went through a major revival with the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, which brought connected universes featuring some of the most popular characters in comics. That success launched a new wave of superhero movies and TV shows, many of them favoring a darker, more realistic approach.Shows such as Doom Patrol, The Umbrella Academy and Watchmen became notable examples of that wave, bringing mature themes and a darker tone. As the MCU and the DC Universe expanded into television, those franchises increasingly dominated the conversation, overshadowing other superhero series.Prime Video’s four flagship shows, however, have been described as better than most of what the MCU and DC Universe have produced for television. The group covers a range of styles, from self-aware comedy to graphic vigilante drama and animated storytelling. The Tick Brings Self-Aware ComedyThe Tick arrived first, based on Ben Edlund’s comic book character of the same name. It was the second live-action adaptation after Fox’s canceled 2001 series. The show follows the title character, played by Peter Serafinowicz, a near-invulnerable superhero in a blue tick suit who fights crime in the City. With his sidekick Arthur, played by Griffin Newman, he discovers that the supervillain The Terror still holds considerable power over the city’s underworld.Despite its quality and critical success, The Tick was canceled after two seasons. It remains one of Prime Video’s best shows thanks to its lighter tone, self-aware comedy and its standalone world, which requires no prior knowledge to enjoy. The Boys and Gen V Target VoughtIn 2019, Prime Video released The Boys, based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The show is set in a world where superpowered people work for Vought International, which manages their public image to present them as heroes. In reality, the Supers are corrupt, selfish and responsible for various crimes. The Boys are a group of vigilantes seeking to bring Vought down and expose its heroes. The series is known for its darker and more mature tone, graphic violence, complex stories and morally ambiguous characters. Those elements are cited as giving it more depth than Marvel and DC offerings.Four years later, the spinoff Gen V was released, following young Supers who test their moral boundaries for a place in Vought’s elite team.Invincible Remains ActiveInvincible arrived in 2021 and is the only one of the four shows still active. It is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. The story follows Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, the son of Omni-Man, voiced by J.K. Simmons, the most powerful superhero. When Mark begins to develop superpowers, he fights crime as Invincible, but learns dark truths about his father along the way.The animated series is noted for exploring more mature themes and subverting traditional superhero tropes, giving it what critics describe as greater depth than Marvel and DC’s television output.Marvel and DC Titles on Prime VideoAlthough the MCU and the DC Universe belong to other companies and stream elsewhere, Prime Video is home to two Marvel and DC shows that have also performed well.Batman: Caped Crusader, developed by Bruce Timm, premiered on Prime Video in 2024. It reimagines Batman’s world in a darker Gotham City inspired by the character’s stories from the 1940s and 1960s.The show focuses on a young Bruce Wayne, voiced by Hamish Linklater, in his early years as Batman, and highlights his detective side alongside his crime-fighting. A second season arrived in July 2026, and there is no official word yet on a third season. Also released in 2026 was Marvel’s Spider-Noir, developed by Oren Uziel. Set in 1930s New York City, it follows Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, a former superhero known as the Spider who now works as a private detective.Together, the lineup shows that Prime Video offers superhero variety beyond the connected universes, with standalone stories, emotional depth and accessible entry points for viewers who are not steeped in comic book lore.
