President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the opening night performance of the musical “Chicago” at the Kennedy Center this Tuesday evening. This event may represent one of his final appearances there for a show before the performing arts venue undergoes a planned two-year renovation starting in July.

A Night at the Kennedy Center

The President will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, for the performance. This marks their first joint attendance at the Kennedy Center since they attended the premiere of the documentary “Melania” back in January.

Last summer, President Trump attended the opening night production of "Les Misérables." He was also present for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony honoring comedian Bill Maher on June 28, an event he might attend again.

Context of the Venue Closure

The planned two-year closure of the Kennedy Center was approved following numerous cancellations by prominent performers, musicians, and groups. These groups expressed displeasure after President Trump assumed control of the institution.

The musical “Chicago” itself is set in the 1920s and serves as a sharp satire. It critiques how the entertainment industry and media elevate criminals into celebrities.

Presidential Schedule and Commitments

While presidents often manage multiple responsibilities, Trump’s attendance on Tuesday follows White House statements indicating other major matters occupied his time. These matters reportedly included the war in Iran.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on Trump’s absence from the CPAC gathering in Texas. She stated that he still "loves" the event and maintains a "very good relationship" with its organizers.

Leavitt explained the decision not to attend was purely logistical. "It was just simply for scheduling purposes this year, with it being in Texas, it was best for the president’s schedule and what he has on his plate right now not to go," she told reporters on Monday.

Instead of attending CPAC, President Trump spent the preceding weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He also visited his golf club on both Saturday and Sunday.
