Natalie Potts to Return to Nebraska Huskers

Former Big Ten Freshman of the Year Natalie Potts has confirmed she will return to the Nebraska women’s basketball program for the 2026-27 season. The announcement came via a post on Potts’ personal Instagram account on Tuesday.

Injury and Redshirt Details

Potts has been sidelined for nearly two seasons while rehabbing a knee injury sustained in December of 2024 during the fifth game of the 2024-25 season. The injury required surgery, and she was immediately placed on a medical redshirt.

Potts' Recovery Journey

Despite participating in game-day shootarounds during her third season, Potts’ recovery proved too challenging for a return during the 2025-26 season. She was subsequently awarded a redshirt for that season, with the program announcing the decision on January 29th.

“I am making slow but steady progress, and I appreciate the thoughts and encouragement of Husker fans everywhere,” Potts said in a release in late January. “I love my teammates and coaches and will give them my full support as we push for the postseason. I really want to be out there fighting to win with them, but I am just not in position to do that yet.”

Coach Williams' Support

Nebraska coach Amy Williams has consistently expressed support for Potts throughout her rehabilitation. “Natalie is working diligently and progressing with her rehabilitation,” Williams stated in a January press release. “At this time, we believe that it is in the best interest of her long-term health to give her more time to continue to progress and gain confidence with her return to full participation.”

Potts' Accomplishments

Potts was a unanimous selection for the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2023-24 and received an honorable-mention All-Big Ten nod from the league’s media. As a freshman, she started all 35 games, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, helping Nebraska reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Early Success

Prior to her injury, Potts was off to a strong start in her sophomore season, averaging 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds through four games. She was a highly-regarded recruit, earning Missouri High School Player of the Year honors twice and leading Incarnate Word Academy to three consecutive Class 6 state championships.

Looking Ahead to 2026-27

Potts joins guard Logan Nissley as a confirmed returner for the 2026-27 season. The Huskers have seen limited movement in the transfer portal, with only one player, Jessica Petrie, reportedly entering. Coach Williams believes Potts has used her time to improve her game.

Skill Development During Rehab

“After being named freshman of the year, just went to work where some people kind of let their foot off the gas,” Williams said in December. “She’s a way better ball handler than she’s ever been. She’s picking up new skills that I think are going to broaden her game.”

Nebraska also welcomes incoming four-star freshmen Ashlyn Koupal and Ava Miles from the 2026 recruiting class, adding further talent to the roster.
