A Portland man has been arrested following an alleged extortion attempt at a 7-Eleven convenience store. Mason Thomas Clark, 19, is accused of falsely identifying himself as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent to demand money from a store clerk.
Details of the Incident
According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 29 at the 7-Eleven located at 9111 Southeast Division Street in Portland. A clerk reported that two men entered the store, and Clark approached the register.
Alleged Threats and Extortion
Clark allegedly told the clerk, “I am Immigration and Customs. You have two options: Give me money or I will come after your family.” When the clerk stated he did not have any money, Clark reportedly threatened to shoot him if he didn’t comply.
The employee, who is of Asian descent and an immigrant, stated he feared for his safety. Both men ultimately left the store without obtaining any money after the clerk reiterated he had nothing to give them.
Arrest and Charges
Police subsequently arrested Clark. During questioning, Clark claimed a person named “Tim” instructed him to pose as an ICE agent and provided him with what he believed to be a firearm.
Clark was arraigned on Monday on charges of attempted theft by extortion and second-degree bias crime. He was released on his own recognizance with the conditions that he stay away from 7-Eleven stores and appear in court on April 27.
Prior Legal Issues
Court records indicate Clark was previously sentenced to 18 months of probation in Washington County in 2025 after pleading guilty to initiating a false report.
