Bay Bridge Disruption Halted by Law Enforcement
Police and California Highway Patrol officers successfully prevented a planned takeover of the Bay Bridge by a large group of cyclists on Saturday afternoon. The intervention occurred after the group was observed engaging in highly dangerous behavior.
Authorities reported that the 85 cyclists were seen swerving aggressively in and out of moving traffic. Furthermore, the group reportedly came dangerously close to striking pedestrians before attempting to access the bridge structure.
Drone Surveillance Leads to Intervention
San Francisco police utilized department drones to track the movement of the large cycling contingent. The drones observed the group riding the wrong way up the Harrison Street off-ramp, aiming for the bridge's lower deck.
Officers swiftly moved to establish blockades at both the entry and exit points of the on-ramp. This decisive action successfully barred the cyclists from entering the Bay Bridge structure.
Official Response and Calls for Stronger Deterrents
Following the incident, ABC7 Eyewitness News contacted San Francisco supervisor Danny Sauter regarding the event. Sauter expressed support for stricter consequences recently passed by the city late last year.
Supervisor Sauter stated, "Our office has been focused on reducing sideshow and dirt bike activity. This past week's actions show the need for enforcement and deterrents to this behavior which can be dangerous and put lives at risk." He confirmed the city will continue to evaluate all available measures to deter such dangerous actions.
The article also briefly mentioned an unrelated incident where a Santa Clara man suffered broken ribs and back injuries following a brutal attack by a bicyclist mob.
