Pickleball Group 'The Unstoppable' Brings Seniors Together in Montgomery Retired coach David Thomas leads The Unstoppable, a Montgomery pickleball group for players 50 and older that meets at Downtown and Wilson YMCAs. A pickleball group for older adults called The Unstoppable is bringing seniors together in Montgomery, Alabama, under the guidance of retired educator and coach David Thomas. The group, which has been active for about a year, meets Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Montgomery Downtown YMCA and Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wilson YMCA. David Thomas Brings Coaching Experience to PickleballDavid Thomas has coached football, basketball, track and field, soccer and golf during his career as an educator and coach. After retiring, he discovered pickleball and quickly became an advocate for the sport.He said anybody and everybody can play it, no matter what physical condition they have. Thomas described the game as fun, popular and inexpensive to play.He enjoyed pickleball so much that he decided to offer lessons to seniors in the Montgomery area. According to Thomas, the participants are loving it.The Unstoppable Welcomes Players 50 and OlderThe group is made up of athletes who are 50 years old and older. One of the first tasks for the group was choosing a fitting name, and they settled on The Unstoppable.Carolyn Thomas, who is 68 years old, said she ran some track in high school. For her, pickleball has been a great pick me up.She said she was sitting on her sofa as a couch potato before she started playing pickleball in November. Since then, the sport has become a regular part of her routine.Competitive Spirit and Growth in MontgomeryDon’t let their ages fool you, because the games get competitive. Carolyn Thomas said she is trying to win, but she is also thankful she can get out and move around.She said losing does not bother her, and her goal is to hit the ball back whether it is in or out. That attitude reflects the fun and inclusive spirit that David Thomas promotes.The Unstoppable has only been around for a year, but it is growing fast as more and more older adults develop a passion for pickleball. The group offers a chance for seniors to stay active, socialize and enjoy a low-cost sport.David Thomas said pickleball is easy to pick up and does not require a high level of fitness, which makes it appealing to a wide range of people. The regular schedule at the two YMCA locations gives members consistent opportunities to play.As the group continues to attract new players, The Unstoppable is becoming a fixture in the Montgomery senior sports community.
