NOMO Rewards Philly Youth with Vehicles and Opportunities
Two young Philadelphia residents were surprised with cars on Wednesday, thanks to the efforts of local non-profit organization, NOMO (New Options More Opportunities). The initiative is part of NOMO’s commitment to supporting youth and removing barriers to employment.
Youth Driving Program Funded by City Grants
NOMO’s youth driving program is funded by the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Public Safety and additional grants. The program aims to provide reliable transportation for young people who have secured jobs through NOMO’s various employment initiatives.
Recipients Express Gratitude
John Winchester, 21, received a Ford Escape. He is currently a second-class mechanic with Septa and expressed his appreciation, stating, “When you see the stuff, they’re doing for us and everyone else all the other students and potential participants coming in, you can feel every ounce of love, support and help.” Winchester highlighted the convenience of having a vehicle for work, eliminating the need for public transportation and allowing him to easily transport tools.
Liara Lis Santiago, 20, was also awarded a car. “Oh, I wasn’t even expecting this,” she said. Santiago was recognized for her achievements, including being named Eagles athlete of the year and school district scholar of the year, as well as her recent acceptance into a carpentry program.
Comprehensive Support Provided
NOMO Executive Director Rickey Duncan explained the extent of the support provided, stating, “They got gift cards, they got full tanks, and they got four-year warranties on their cars we wanted to make sure they have everything they need.” He emphasized that the cars were essential for accessing the job opportunities secured by the recipients.
Hundreds Benefit from Resource Event
Hundreds of young people attended the event at NOMO West to register for driver’s license programs, obtain working papers, and explore summer employment options. Dawan Williams, VP of Restorative Justice for NOMO, announced, “Inside they’re signing up for their for the driver’s license program, working papers and we’re giving away 300 jobs today and summer youth employment opportunities.”
State Senator Sharif Street was also in attendance to show his support, calling the opportunities “life-changing.” The event focused on equipping young people with the necessary tools and resources for a successful summer.
