Philadelphia's culinary scene is celebrating a major achievement, securing seven finalists for the highly coveted 2026 James Beard Awards. These accolades, often considered the highest honor in American dining, will be presented in Chicago this June.
Top Nominations Highlight City's Diverse Offerings
Several of the city's establishments received nominations in major categories. Kalaya earned a nod for Outstanding Restaurant, while Emmett is a finalist for Best New Restaurant.
Furthermore, The Lovers Bar, located within Friday Saturday Sunday, received recognition as a finalist for Outstanding Bar. The awards ceremony is scheduled for June 15 at Chicago’s Lyric Opera theater.
Key Figures Recognized in Finalist Lineup
The list of finalists includes several prominent local restaurateurs and chefs. Chad and Hanna Williams represent Friday Saturday Sunday in the running.
Evan Snyder of Emmett is also among the recognized finalists. Justine MacNeil of Fiore and Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon of Kalaya round out the notable Philly representatives.
Mid-Atlantic Category Showcases Regional Talent
Philadelphia also boasts three nominees within the competitive Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic category. This category spans talent across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
The award specifically celebrates local restaurants that possess “timeless appeal that serve quality food and are beloved by their communities.”
Notable Semifinalists Who Did Not Advance
Not all regional semifinalists progressed to the finalist stage. Among those who did not advance was Cherry Hill-bred restaurateur Greg Vernick.
Vernick had previously won the Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic award at the Beards in 2017. His restaurant, Food & Drink, also holds a recommendation from the Michelin Guide.
Additionally, Pietramala received a Green Star from the Michelin Guide in November. This recognition was for Graye’s dedication to sustainability demonstrated through his work as a chef-forager-fermenter hybrid.
