Persistent Feline Saves Owner from Hidden Danger
An orange cat named Alejandro proved to be far more perceptive than his reputation suggested when he repeatedly woke his owner early one morning, ultimately preventing a potential disaster.
The owner had already performed the usual routine of feeding her three rescue cats—Craven, Alejandro, and Shadowmoon—at 4:30 a.m. before returning to bed. However, Alejandro refused to allow her to sleep in past 6 a.m.
An Annoying Morning Wake-Up Call
The owner recounted that she kept pushing Alejandro off the bed because it was too early for her to rise before work, especially since she had already served breakfast. Alejandro, however, was incredibly insistent, returning immediately after being removed for about five minutes straight.
When the cat’s attempts became louder than normal, the owner suspected something serious must be wrong. She finally got up intending to remove him from the room entirely.
Discovery of the Gas Leak
Upon getting out of bed, she immediately smelled gas. Following Alejandro into the kitchen, she realized he had been trying to alert her to the fact that the gas stove was still on.
The owner, whose name is Rocky, feared one of her worst scenarios had come true. She suspected that Shadowmoon, a curious one-year-old kitten, might have accidentally turned the stove knob while exploring the kitchen counter.
Aftermath and Heroic Recognition
Rocky found Shadowmoon in the middle of the kitchen, while Craven was sitting on the periphery, apparently annoyed by the disruption to his normal sleep schedule. Fortunately, everyone remained safe.
Rocky immediately shut off the stove and opened the windows to ventilate the dangerous fumes before collapsing onto the couch, catching her breath after grasping the severity of the situation.
She then made sure to reward Alejandro extensively. Rocky expressed surprise that Alejandro, whom she described as the "most shy, most easily startled and most likely to walk into a wall or fall off furniture or something else silly," was the one to act decisively.
Alejandro's Remarkable Backstory
Alejandro's history makes his heroic actions even more significant. He was originally a stray from Tennessee who was rescued and transferred to Connecticut, where Rocky adopted him.
The cat lives with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and lost all of his teeth due to severe dental disease. He also suffers from lasting neurological effects after surviving meningitis.
Despite these major challenges, Rocky noted that Alejandro has always displayed strong instincts, once successfully catching a mouse despite being completely toothless. Still, she never anticipated he would recognize and react to such a clear danger.
Public Reaction and Safety Context
Rocky shared her story on the subreddit channel r/cats, where it quickly garnered over 5,800 reactions and 92 comments. Many users praised Alejandro’s persistence, calling him a hero.
One commenter noted, "That is a hero cat! I am glad he didn't let you sleep. Amazing how they know what to do when things go wrong. Good boi, orange!"
The incident also indirectly highlights safety concerns regarding gas stoves. A report mentioned that these appliances can release pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, which can accumulate indoors without proper ventilation.
