Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced on Tuesday that the immediate future of the conflict involving Iran will be decisive. During his first news conference in nearly two weeks, Hegseth confirmed that negotiations aimed at concluding the war are intensifying.
Hegseth Signals Critical Juncture in Iran Conflict
Hegseth asserted that the coming days hold significant weight for the ongoing situation. He stated, "The upcoming days will be decisive. Iran knows that, and there's almost nothing they can militarily do about it," during the briefing.
Stance on Potential Ground Troop Deployment
When questioned about concerns from President Donald Trump's supporters regarding the potential use of US ground forces, Hegseth refused to disclose specific strategies. He emphasized the importance of maintaining operational secrecy with adversaries.
"You can't fight and win a war if you tell your adversary what you are willing to do, or what you are not willing to do, to include boots on the ground," Hegseth explained.
He added that the department is prepared to execute any necessary options for the President, or alternatively, that successful negotiations might negate the need for such actions. "If we needed to, we could execute those options on behalf of the president of the United States and this department. Or maybe we don't have to use them at all, maybe negotiations work," he concluded.
Progress in Conflict Resolution Talks
Despite the continuation of the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has lasted over a month, Hegseth reported positive movement in diplomatic efforts. He described the talks as making progress.
Regarding the negotiations, Hegseth noted, "They are very real. They are ongoing, they are active, and I think, gaining strength."
Unannounced Visit to Middle East Troops
The Pentagon chief also disclosed that he recently made an unannounced visit to the Middle East to meet with US service members involved in operations against Iran. This trip occurred over the weekend.
For security reasons, Hegseth did not specify exact locations. "We were on the ground in CENTCOM on Saturday for about half the day. For reasons of operational security, so those troops are not targeted, the places and bases will not be named," he said, referencing the US Central Command area of responsibility.
Hegseth shared his positive impressions of the visit, stating, "Suffice it to say, the trip was an honour. I had a chance to bear witness, and I witnessed the best of America."
Military Operations Update
General Dan Caine, the top US military officer, provided an update on military actions alongside Hegseth. General Caine confirmed that US forces have successfully struck over 11,000 targets to date.
Caine detailed ongoing military focus areas. "The United States continues to destroy Iran's ballistic missile and capabilities. We remain focused on interdicting and destroying the logistical and supply chains that feed these programs," he stated.
Furthermore, the military continues to challenge Iranian naval power. General Caine added, "we continue to assert dominance over the Iranian navy. We remain focused on targeting their mine-laying capability, their naval assets."
