Pennsylvania Readies for Global Spotlight in 2026

Governor Josh Shapiro announced that Pennsylvania is fully prepared to become the focal point of international attention this summer, mirroring its historical significance from 250 years ago. This readiness comes as the Commonwealth prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

The announcement was made during a pep rally event held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Cherry Street Pier in Philadelphia. The gathering included Governor Shapiro, along with beloved mascots Gritty and the Philly Phanatic, kicking off the celebratory atmosphere with the theme from “Rocky” playing.

Major Events Converge in Spring and Summer

The year 2026 will see Pennsylvania host a series of high-profile events across the spring and summer months. These events are designed to bring people together and celebrate American democracy.

Except for the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh, the majority of these major happenings will be concentrated in and around the Philadelphia area. Organizers from Visit PA, America250PA, and various event committees were present at the rally.

Shapiro Expresses Enthusiasm for Unity

Speaking at the rally, Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of these upcoming celebrations. “We are ready, we are psyched,” Shapiro stated from the stage at Cherry St. Pier on Columbus Blvd.

He further expressed a desire to foster connection during a time that can sometimes feel divided. “We are working to bring the world together at a time when there might be some division out there. So, let’s celebrate our democracy. Let’s enjoy one another, and let’s have a damn good time,” he added.

Economic Impact of Summer Events

The influx of visitors resulting from these major events is expected to provide a significant boost to Pennsylvania’s economy. Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger confirmed the scale of the expected attendance.

Siger projected that over 1 million people will visit Pennsylvania specifically because of these scheduled events. These visitors are anticipated to enhance overall spending across the commonwealth throughout the year.

The total visitor spending for the year is estimated to reach $55 billion. Furthermore, the cumulative impact on all businesses within the state is expected to generate $91 million, according to Secretary Siger.
