The New England Patriots may address the offensive tackle position in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft for the second consecutive year. Last year, the team drafted Will Campbell to begin the Mike Vrabel era.
Future-Proofing the Offensive Line
According to CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson’s latest mock draft, the Patriots are projected to select Clemson right tackle Blake Miller at 31st overall. This selection isn’t necessarily about immediate needs, but rather preparing for the future.
Moses' Contract and Miller's Potential
Current right tackle Morgan Moses is entering his 35th season, prompting the need to identify a long-term replacement. Moses’ contract has no guaranteed money remaining after 2026, making a proactive approach to finding his successor sensible.
Wilson notes, “The team continues to protect Drake Maye with Miller, who made enormous strides last season after an inconsistent 2024.” Miller’s draft stock has been rising, with projections ranging from the high second round to the first.
Balancing Needs and Long-Term Planning
While offensive tackle is a consideration, the Patriots have other needs to address. Edge rusher and wide receiver, both positions impacted by offseason turnover, are potential options at the 31st pick.
However, drafting Miller would proactively address a potential issue in 2027. The Patriots currently have depth at tackle with players like James Hudson and Marcus Bryant, but securing a future starter is a strategic move.
Vrabel's Draft Strategy
Head Coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged the flexibility in the team’s draft approach. Speaking at the NFL Annual Meetings, Vrabel stated, “Maybe we trade up. Maybe we trade out. I don’t know. I’m trying to bring the coach’s perspective on a player and and the personnel side together to to bring the best person in there for our football team.”
Wilson's Full Mock Draft for the Patriots
In addition to Blake Miller (Round 1, Pick 31), Wilson’s mock draft projects the Patriots to select Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers in the second round (Pick 63) and Penn State edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton in the third round (Pick 95).
