Juneau Animal Control officers successfully captured Chester, an opossum, within a shed at N C Machinery in the Mendenhall Valley on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The unexpected discovery of the opossum sparked a flurry of activity and highlighted the unusual circumstances surrounding its presence in the Alaska n city. Tim Travis, an employee at N C Machinery located near the airport, recounted the events of that day.
He and his colleagues, preparing for their lunch break late Thursday morning, were surprised to find an opossum roaming outside their shop. Travis initially expressed disbelief, stating, “I was inside the shop, and one of my co-workers comes running in and goes, ‘You have the number for animal control, we have an opossum.’ And I said, ‘No way. We don’t have opossums in Alaska,’” he said. “He’s like, ‘Well, there’s an opossum outside.’” Their initial surprise quickly turned into action as they realized the situation’s novelty. Opossums are not indigenous to Alaska and are not known to inhabit the state. As an invasive species, their presence poses a potential threat to the local ecosystem. After detection, the opossum, quickly dubbed Chester by a coworker, attempted to flee, seeking refuge in a nearby shed where it hid under a pallet. Travis described the naming process, “We had only had Chester here for like, maybe 10 to 15 minutes. And he’s like, ‘I’m gonna name, Chester.’ I’m like, ‘okay, Chester, it is,’” he said, laughing. Travis and his coworkers collaborated with Juneau Animal Control, assisting in the safe capture of Chester and his transportation. The opossum was safely delivered to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Douglas. \The Alaska Department of Fish and Game played a pivotal role in ensuring Chester's well-being and relocation. Stephanie Samaniego, a wildlife biologist and orphan animal coordinator with Fish and Game, managed the arrangements for Chester's move. The department decided to relocate Chester to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, a more suitable environment for the animal. He was transported by air on Friday afternoon. Samaniego discussed the probable manner of Chester’s arrival in Juneau, suggesting that he likely arrived by accident. Her suspicion is that he was unknowingly transported within a shipping container. She emphasized the critical importance of mitigating the risks associated with invasive species, citing their potential to negatively impact native environments. Invasive species can introduce unfamiliar diseases to native species, compete for limited resources, and even prey on native animals, creating a disruption in the delicate balance of the ecosystem. “They can bring in diseases that native species haven’t been exposed to. They can create competition for resources, and they can even use native species as prey,” she said. “But knowing that we had dealt with an opossum in the past, we knew our way forward, I guess you could say.” This prior experience provided valuable insight and a roadmap for dealing with Chester’s case. \The encounter with Chester sparked memories of a similar incident from the past, specifically the case of a female opossum named Grubby. Grubby had arrived in Juneau in 2023, also in a shipping container from Washington. Grubby had captured the public's imagination, becoming a social media sensation. She gained notoriety after evading capture attempts and remaining at large for weeks, before the Homer Police Department eventually took her into custody. The experience with Grubby provided a valuable lesson and context for the authorities when they faced a similar situation with Chester. The swift and efficient handling of Chester's case is a testament to the proactive measures and knowledge the authorities have acquired through the experience with Grubby. It shows their determination to protect the local ecosystem and prevent invasive species from causing harm.
