Collaborative Effort Targets Violent Crime
A recent two-week initiative known as Operation Southern Star has successfully concluded in Montgomery, Alabama. This collaborative effort involved the FBI working alongside state and local law enforcement agencies to address violent crime in the region.
The operation resulted in 63 arrests and significant seizures, including 40 drug-related confiscations, 52 firearms, and over $10,000 in cash. Additionally, authorities successfully executed seven search warrants during the two-week period.
The VIPER Program and Future Initiatives
Operation Southern Star is part of the FBI’s VIPER (Violent Crime Initiative) program. This surge initiative is designed to target cities where violent crime is prevalent and where local officials have requested federal assistance.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Sara J. Jones emphasized that this operation is not a one-time event but rather a new model for interagency cooperation. "We have a presence here that we maintain and we have now formed the model of how we want to work together to greatly impact the community," Jones stated.
Commitment to Community Safety
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall praised the success of the mission, highlighting the importance of breaking down jurisdictional barriers. "Today is an example of when we are at our best in law enforcement," Marshall said. "When you have collaboration and cooperation across federal, state and local officials... everybody is united behind a singular mission."
Moving forward, the FBI intends to maintain its presence in Montgomery to ensure continued safety. Officials are now calling on the public to assist in these efforts by reporting tips and staying vigilant regarding violent crime in their neighborhoods.
