DHS Shutdown Blamed on Democratic Stance
U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar publicly stated that Democrats are responsible for the ongoing partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The admission came during a town hall meeting held Tuesday in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota.
Demands for ICE Reforms
Funding Bill Stalled
Omar explained that congressional Democrats refused to support a DHS funding bill unless Republicans agreed to implement ten reforms related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These reforms included requiring ICE agents to identify themselves while patrolling communities – often referred to as “unmasking ICE agents.”
Republican Response
According to Omar, both Republicans and the White House “refused” to accept these proposed changes, leading to the current partial government shutdown. “So far, the Republicans and the president have refused to say ‘yes’ to any of those reforms,” Omar stated.
Impact of the Shutdown
The shutdown is impacting various agencies within DHS. Omar highlighted that the lack of funding affects not only ICE but also the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Coast Guard, and cybersecurity personnel. She emphasized the department lacks resources to fully operate.
Heightened Security Concerns
Omar’s comments came at a time when the nation’s terror threat level is described as “higher than usual.” This heightened concern was particularly acute earlier in the month, with worries about potential attacks from Iran and its associated groups. Senate Democrats have also repeatedly rejected Republican attempts to reopen the department.
Future Funding Plans
Senate Republicans are planning to utilize the reconciliation process to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a method that bypasses the typical 60-vote threshold required for passage.
