Unranked Oklahoma upset No. 1 Texas 27-24 in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Oct. 10, 2026, when Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yard field goal as time expired. It was one of the bigger upsets of the 2026 college football season and handed the Longhorns their first loss of the year. The win gave the Sooners a measure of redemption after they lost as the No. 11 team in the nation to Michigan in Week 2, then were steamrolled on the road by Georgia in their previous game.Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said, I want these guys to experience victory, certainly in this game, it was incredibly important. Texas looked like it would control the rivalry early. Arch Manning made one of his better plays, running to his left and throwing a 41-yard touchdown. Oklahoma matched it in the next quarter, but the Longhorns took a 17-7 lead at the half and led by seven going into the fourth quarter.Oklahoma Rally To Erase DeficitThe Sooners rallied late. Oklahoma squeaked out a field goal in the third quarter, and both teams exchanged punts before the Sooners opened the fourth with a game-tying touchdown run by Lloyd Avant, erasing their double-digit deficit. After another exchange of punts, disaster struck Texas on its second drive of the fourth quarter.Manning avoided the rush on second-and-13 and heaved a pass well out of the reach of any Texas target, but right into the grasp of Oklahoma's Peyton Bowen, who returned it 42 yards for a pick-six and a 24-17 Sooners lead with 10:07 to go. Manning was down but not out. He hit Cam Coleman on a 34-yard dime to snatch momentum back, then found Jermaine Bishop Jr. two plays later to tie the score at 24 with 6:32 remaining. The Longhorns forced a punt after four plays and were in the driver's seat. Texas quickly moved into scoring range but had to settle for a 52-yard field goal try, which went wide right. Oklahoma took over at its own 35 with 1:54 to go. After forcing an Oklahoma punt, Texas had a shot to win in walk-off fashion, but Manning threw yet another fourth-quarter interception with 19 seconds remaining, ending the threat.Texas Coach Criticizes Manning Ball SecurityManning said, I think we've got to do a better job, especially me, not getting loose with the ball. I think we beat ourselves a lot tonight. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said he thought Manning would probably want back the throw on Bowen's pick-six, but credited Courtland Guillory for making the play on the second interception. Sarkisian said, I think Arch competed his tail off, and he made some tremendous plays.I thought there was a level of confidence, consistency and rhythm in which he was throwing the ball. We've got to continue to run the ball better so it's not all on his shoulders of when he's got to throw it to go make all these plays for us. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer connected on successive passes, for 13 and 20 yards, to set up Sandell for the walk-off field goal with nine seconds left.Mateer said, I thought about this game for 365 days. I think that was the longest fourth quarter I've ever been a part of. It was awesome and I'll never forget it. But I knew 19 seconds left that this was the time.Oklahoma Victory Cost Texas Top SEC SpotManning finished 19-for-31 passing with 261 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. It was Oklahoma's first game in the rivalry since 2023. Texas had at least a couple chances to win its third-straight Red River Rivalry, but the top-ranked team in the country faltered on its biggest stage of the college season. The loss automatically cost the Longhorns their first-place spot in the SEC, with Alabama and Georgia moving ahead. The Sooners took advantage of a missed field goal in the final minutes and two fourth-quarter interceptions by Manning to pull off the wild victory at the Cotton Bowl.
