Addressing the Offensive Struggles
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are entering the 2026 season with a clear objective: revitalizing an offense that struggled significantly last year. The team averaged only 14 points per game, largely hampered by an ineffective passing attack.
Statistically, the team recorded just 174.1 passing yards per game throughout the season. The passing game also suffered from a negative touchdown-to-interception ratio, totaling only seven passing touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions.
A Legacy of Explosive Passing
These recent struggles stand in stark contrast to the program's history of high-powered offenses. In 2023, quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 3,460 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the team to the Big 12 Championship. That season, receiver Brennan Presley contributed 991 receiving yards, helping the Cowboys average nearly 30 points per game.
The program's most notable aerial success occurred in 2017, when Mason Rudolph threw for 4,904 yards and 37 touchdowns. With James Washington recording 1,549 receiving yards, the team maintained an explosive average of 45 points per game.
New Talent for 2026
To replicate past success, Oklahoma State has turned to the transfer portal. The team's newest quarterback, Drew Mestemaker, arrives after a standout season at North Texas, where he led the nation with 4,379 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. His potential was highlighted by a 608-yard performance against Charlotte.
Supporting the New Attack
Mestemaker will be joined by familiar faces in the receiver corps to help anchor the offense. His top target from North Texas, Wyatt Young, has transferred to Stillwater to continue their partnership. Additionally, Chris Barnes and Justin Bowick are expected to play significant roles in the revamped receiving unit.
Oklahoma State aims to break a winless streak in Big 12 play that dates back to 2023. By returning to the explosive offensive identity of the past, the Cowboys hope that Mestemaker’s arm will be the catalyst for a successful 2026 campaign.
