A primary focus for the Oklahoma (OU) offense this offseason centers on significantly enhancing the team's rushing attack. Offensive Coordinator Ben Arbuckle has dedicated considerable time reviewing the 2025 season tape to pinpoint specific areas requiring growth and improvement.
Leveraging Kevin Wilson's Extensive Experience
A Valuable Sounding Board
The offensive staff includes assistant Kevin Wilson, who possesses deep expertise in developing physical rushing schemes. Wilson previously served as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator and worked alongside Arbuckle when Arbuckle was at Indiana.
After a stint with Tulsa, Wilson returned to the Oklahoma staff, now serving as a vital sounding board for Arbuckle and the entire offensive coaching unit. Arbuckle praised Wilson's contributions, noting his constant drive to refine processes.
“As far as his football knowledge and what he brings to that, it's constant, 'Hey, let's look at a way to do this. Or if we're doing something, he's great about challenging to make something better,'” Arbuckle stated. He added that Wilson excels at finding ways to improve execution while simultaneously holding staff members accountable.
Offensive Line Growth and Mentality Shift
Player Development Paying Dividends
Beyond seeking better injury luck, Arbuckle is driving the entire offense to maximize every repetition during spring practice. He noted the significant development of the offensive linemen who are now entering their second year in the system.
“It’s been really, really fun watching these offensive linemen that we all here knew as young guys last year really grow into that role of, ‘OK, I have 13 games under my belt; I’ve played in this league, I’ve played big-time college football. This isn’t new to me anymore,’” Arbuckle explained. The linemen are now demonstrating leadership and attacking practice sessions with renewed confidence.
Schematic Adjustments and Mentality
The coaching staff is implementing different schematic approaches and technique adjustments designed to place the players in better positions for success. However, Arbuckle stressed that technical improvements alone are insufficient for a strong run game.
“But all of that is no substitute for the mentality you have to have when you’re handing the ball off and running it, and Coach Venables said it best: It’s a kick-ass mentality,” Arbuckle concluded.
