This edition of Skull Session highlights positive sentiment surrounding Ohio State football coach Ryan Day, alongside news concerning a top basketball signee, Anthony Thompson.
Subscriber Poll Ranks College Football Coaches
The Athletic recently conducted a survey asking subscribers about the best coaches in college football. The poll sought opinions on the top coach overall, the top five coaches in any order, and approval ratings for their favorite team's coach.
Notre Dame fans showed significant engagement, comprising nearly 20 percent of the total responses. This enthusiasm helped place Notre Dame's coach, Freeman, third in the rankings, ahead of Ryan Day and Dan Lanning.
Ryan Day's Standing Among Peers
Ryan Day is grouped with Cignetti, Smart, and Dabo Swinney as active coaches who have secured a national championship. Despite a four-game losing streak against Michigan, Day maintains an impressive 82-12 overall record.
Remarkably, even three Michigan fans voted for Day as the best coach in the nation. Among Ohio State fans surveyed, 35 percent named Day as the number one coach, with 97 percent approving of his job performance.
Testimonials suggest recent success, including the 2024 national title and the 2025 victory over Michigan, bolster Day's reputation. Subscriber Jeff H. noted, “Ryan Day recruits at the highest level, puts offensive skill players in the NFL at an incredible rate and consistently wins.”
Wesley added, “As an Ohio State homer, Ryan Day has become everything we could’ve hoped and more. He has brought an NFL feel to our program and despite continued turnover on the coaching staff he brings in talented and experienced coaches.”
Ohio State NFL Draft Prospects Outlook
With the NFL draft approaching, projections for Ohio State talent remain high. One analyst predicted all seven rounds—257 total picks—for the 2026 draft.
This projection included 11 Buckeyes selected, ranging from the No. 2 overall pick to the 223rd selection. Ohio State had 14 players drafted in 2025, meaning 11 more in 2026 would total 25 selections over two consecutive drafts.
Basketball Signee Anthony Thompson in McDonald's All-American Game
Ohio State basketball signee Anthony Thompson is scheduled to participate in Tuesday's McDonald’s All-American Game. He is the first Buckeye since D’Angelo Russell to earn this distinction.
Thompson's Performance and Profile
Thompson, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound small forward, is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2026 class. Ahead of the game, evaluators noted his strong showing.
Analyst Shaw commented on his balance and ability to get clean looks at the basket, despite needing to add weight. Shaw observed, “Thompson is thin and will need to continue adding weight as he progresses, but he did stick his nose in there on the glass and got into passing lanes defensively.”
Thompson reportedly outperformed other elite prospects in attendance, including Cameron Williams and Jordan Smith Jr. The Lebanon, Ohio native showcased significant production on the 3SSB circuit in 2025, averaging 22 points per game on 53% shooting.
Defensively, he averaged 1.9 blocks and 1.6 steals per game, aided by a massive 7-foot-3 wingspan. His length and scoring upside are highly anticipated by Ohio State fans.
D'Angelo Russell's Golf Endeavors
Former Ohio State star D'Angelo Russell launched a golf YouTube channel last year. He has featured appearances from athletes like Devin Booker and Klay Thompson.
Recently, Russell released a one-hour, ten-minute video playing 18 holes at Turnberry Isle Country Club with Fat Perez (FP) of Bob Does Sports. Russell reflected on his brief time at Ohio State, stating he was “so scared” as a McDonald’s All-American and had little fun initially.
He credited the football team’s championship win that year for providing energy. Russell concluded, “But as soon as season ended, I was out of there.” He was noted as a capable golfer, losing by only three holes in match play against FP.
