Ohio City Residents Demand Action After Car Break-Ins
Residents in Ohio City and neighboring communities are expressing anger and frustration following a series of car break-ins that occurred early Tuesday morning. More than a dozen vehicles sustained significant damage, prompting calls for immediate action from local authorities.
Extent of the Damage
News 5 Cleveland’s Overnight News Tracker documented extensively damaged cars along Clinton Avenue, stretching from West 29th Street to West 45th Street in Ohio City. Viewers also reported similar incidents in Tremont and Battery Park. The damage included smashed windows on a variety of vehicles, ranging from Hyundais to BMWs.
Resident Reactions
Jim Garmback, a long-time Ohio City resident, expressed his exasperation, stating, “It’s bull s**t. I’m gonna put my house up for sale.” This is the second time his car windows have been smashed in the last three months, and he has experienced similar incidents in recent years.
Garmback described the disruption and expense caused by the break-ins, saying, “You wake up early for work, and both cars are broken into. Now you’ve got to call off, get repairs scheduled—it’s a mess.” He noted that despite the damage, nothing was stolen from his vehicle.
A Puzzling Trend
Residents report that the perpetrators appear to be focused on vandalism rather than theft. Some neighbors have resorted to leaving their car doors unlocked, even posting notes indicating they are unlocked, to avoid the cost of window repairs. Gia Smith explained her reasoning: “I’d rather someone open the door than break the window.”
Police Response and Investigation
As of Thursday afternoon, the Cleveland Police Department had received only three official reports regarding the vehicle break-ins in Ohio City. Police are actively investigating the incidents and have increased patrols in the affected areas.
According to a police spokesperson, “We will continue to investigate these that have been reported, and any additional reports that may arise. As always we will continue to patrol our neighborhoods and encourage the public to contact us if they see anything that may be suspicious.”
While residents suspect younger individuals may be responsible, this has not been officially confirmed by law enforcement. No suspect descriptions have been released at this time.
