NYC Airport Security Lines Improve
As of Wednesday, wait times at Newark Liberty International Airport have decreased significantly. Travelers are reporting delays between 10 and 20 minutes, according to airport officials and passengers.
LaGuardia Airport Still Faces Delays
However, LaGuardia Airport is still experiencing substantial delays, with wait times reaching up to two hours at some gates. The improvement in conditions at other airports hasn't yet extended to LaGuardia.
TSA Paychecks Restore Stability
The easing of security lines coincides with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers receiving their first paychecks on Monday. This follows weeks of disruption caused by the partial government shutdown.
Shutdown Impact on TSA Staffing
Despite the restored pay, concerns remain about the long-term impact of the shutdown. More than 500 TSA workers have resigned nationwide since the shutdown began in mid-February, contributing to staffing shortages.
Callouts and Operational Strain
Some airports across the country have reported callout rates as high as 40%, straining operations during a busy travel season. These staffing issues have the potential to worsen delays if not addressed.
Political Stalemate Continues
The underlying funding dispute in Washington remains unresolved. Lawmakers have not yet passed a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA.
Congressional Recess and White House Response
Congress is currently on a two-week recess, with limited sessions scheduled. The White House is urging lawmakers to return to Washington and reach a funding agreement, warning that continued uncertainty could again disrupt airport operations.
Travelers are advised to arrive early and check for updates before heading to the airport. Officials warn that delays could increase if the shutdown continues and staffing levels are further affected.
