Grand Jury No True Bill in Nolan Wells CaseAn 18-year-old Nolan Wells disappeared and later died, and his family has sought answers. A grand jury declined to indict anyone in the case, issuing a no true bill. The grand jury report outlined the evidence they received, including cell phone downloads, surveillance data, GPS data, and the printed report of Nolan’s cell phone. District Attorney McIlrath emphasized that the grand jury’s decision followed a thorough review of all available evidence.Dispute Over Deleted Phone DataAt the press conference, forensic expert Andrew Garrett, with Garrett Discovery, detailed information extracted from Nolan’s phone, including when the phone was accessed. Garrett said some data was deleted from the phone. He stated that things were deleted from the phone from the time Wells last had it until his parents received it. When asked by Eric Hertz, an attorney on Crump’s team, if the deleted items were Snapchat things, Garrett responded that they were Snapchat, correct.However, McIlrath disputed the interpretation of these findings. She said the user action discussed by Garrett is from other Snapchat users, not someone physically accessing Nolan Wells’ phone. She added that if the Crump team has evidence to the contrary, they have not provided it to her office. McIlrath also noted that the 30-hour digital download Garrett discussed was never provided to the State, and that all they received were two emails containing around 300 pages of selected findings from Nolan’s cell phone.McIlrath’s Full Response and Grand Jury FindingsMcIlrath released a full statement defending her office’s actions. She pointed out that the grand jury returned a detailed report concerning their findings in the Nolan Wells death investigation, and that the report references the cell phone extraction reports their office received and their consideration of them.She also addressed the family’s concerns about the phone being accessed before they received it. She mentioned that when she recently spoke to Mrs. Wonsley, she noted how relieved she must have been to learn that no one physically accessed Nolan’s phone after his last known use and before his parents received it. McIlrath stated that the Crump team made a decision to wait until the 11th hour to do a private phone extraction and only provide the grand jury with certain portions of the results. She characterized this as a strategic choice to control public information and create a misleading public narrative, rather than a failure of the State of Mississippi to be thorough.Regarding the autopsy report released today, McIlrath said the grand jury report outlines its findings related to Nolan’s autopsy and what evidence they considered. The grand jury received both the State of Mississippi and Dr. Mitchell’s reports and received their testimony. Both the State Medical Examiner and Dr. Mitchell arrived at the same conclusion, except for whether there was superficial, non-fatal, non-deep tissue bruising on Nolan’s buttocks and shoulder.McIlrath also expressed concern about the public accusations against Nolan’s friends. She said that what the snaps tell us is how strong Nolan’s bonds of friendships were, and that the family and the Crump team should not have allowed Nolan’s friends to be publicly accused and have their lives and their family’s lives threatened and reputations ruined.
