James Gunn officially took the helm of DC operations near the close of 2022. Just two years later, his vision for the DC Universe (DCU) launched with the animated series Creature Commandos.
DCU Continuity and Key Players
Creature Commandos introduced characters like Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo. Grillo later reprised his role in the first DCU movie, Superman. Furthermore, Grillo appeared again in the second season of Peacemaker at the end of 2025, establishing him as the sole actor featured across all three initial DCU projects.
Introducing Supergirl to the Big Screen
The DCU continues its cinematic rollout next year when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26. This film will officially introduce Milly Alcock to audiences as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. Alcock's character previously made a brief appearance opposite David Corenswet in Superman.
Second 'Supergirl' Trailer Premieres
DC Studios released the second official trailer for Supergirl this afternoon, ahead of its June premiere. This new preview offers the most extensive look yet at Jason Momoa's portrayal of Lobo.
Lobo was initially teased at the conclusion of the first Supergirl teaser, which garnered over 20 million views across social media platforms within its first week. The film promises a strong ensemble cast alongside Alcock and Momoa.
Confirmed Cast and Creative Team
The cast for Supergirl includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. David Krumholtz is set to play Zor-El, with Emilly Beecham portraying Alura In-Ze. David Corenswet will also reprise his role as Kal-El.
Craig Gillespie, known for directing the 2017 hit I, Tonya, will direct the movie. The screenplay was penned by Ana Noguiera. James Gunn and Peter Safran are serving as producers on the film.
Upcoming DCU Slate for 2026 and Beyond
The DCU followed a pattern this year, featuring one major film release (Superman) and one major television launch (Peacemaker Season 2). The upcoming year mirrors this structure, with Supergirl as the feature film and Lanterns as the main HBO Max series.
While Lanterns lacks a firm release date, it is confirmed to debut this August. The series will feature Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.
Looking ahead to 2027, Gunn’s universe will see the arrival of the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. David Corenswet will star as Superman opposite Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Alcock is anticipated to appear as Supergirl in that sequel, although this has not been officially confirmed.
