New Orleans Man Faces 195+ Charges in Child Abuse Case
A New Orleans man, Jamie Borne, is facing a significantly increased number of charges related to child sexual abuse material and animal abuse. Borne was initially arrested earlier this month on 40 counts of possessing such material and possessing a child sex doll.
Escalating Charges and Court Appearance
Newly filed court documents reveal 195 additional counts of possession of child sex abuse material involving a child under 13. He also faces two charges of sexual abuse of an animal. The 30-year-old Borne appeared in New Orleans Criminal District Court on Thursday before Magistrate Judge Juana M. Lumbard.
His bond was increased to $345,000, added to existing bond amounts from the initial charges. This case has sparked considerable concern within the community, emphasizing the challenges of online child exploitation.
Investigation Details and Roblox Connection
The investigation began with an arrest by Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and Louisiana State Police investigators. A forensic analysis of seized electronic devices uncovered additional evidence, including children’s clothing, used and unused condoms, and devices believed to contain illegal material.
Borne's Role on the Roblox Platform
A key element of the case is Borne’s connection to the Roblox gaming platform. He identified himself as a contributing programmer on the platform during the investigation. Roblox has stated Borne was not an employee, but a contributor who builds experiences, and has since deactivated his accounts and experiences.
Probation officers initially visited Borne’s home for a 2023 probation violation involving smoke grenades and a gun. During this visit, they observed a child-sized sex doll, prompting the involvement of HSI and Louisiana State Police.
Legal Challenges to Roblox
The situation is complicated by ongoing lawsuits against Roblox from several states, including Louisiana. These lawsuits allege the platform creates an environment conducive to sexual predators. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill highlighted the platform’s lack of age verification and parental permission requirements.
Murrill cited games containing sexually explicit material as a major concern. She emphasized the ability for predators to pose as children and for children to bypass age restrictions.
Potential Penalties
A conviction for possession of child sex abuse material could result in a fine of up to $50,000 and a sentence of five to twenty years of hard labor without parole. Offenses related to the child sex doll carry penalties ranging from a fine and up to one year in prison to at least one year in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
This case underscores the challenges of protecting children in the digital age and the need for continued vigilance against online exploitation.
