New Brunswick gets $219 million loan from Ottawa for Mactaquac dam upgrade Ottawa provides a $219-million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank for upgrades to New Brunswick's largest hydroelectric facility, the Mactaquac Generation Station, along with $50 million for the Salisbury Terminal. New Brunswick has secured a $219-million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank to fund upgrades to the province's largest hydroelectric facility, the Mactaquac Generation Station, located west of Fredericton on the Saint John River. Mactaquac Dam Overhaul Funding DetailsThe facility, which produces 672 megawatts, will receive technical studies, regulatory reviews, First Nations engagement and planning support as part of the overhaul. The federal government will spend more than $260 million on modernising the Mactaquac dam and related infrastructure. In addition to the loan for the dam, Ottawa will provide NB Power with $50 million to upgrade the Salisbury Terminal, a key component in managing electricity flow across the provincial grid. NB Power, a Crown-owned utility, decided in 2016 to commit up to $3.6 billion to keep the dam operational. Without repairs, the concrete structure would have to be decommissioned by 2030 because of swelling. The planned upgrades are expected to extend the dam's operational life to 2068.Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said investing in New Brunswick's power grid would attract further investment and create jobs in the province. He also highlighted the importance of enhancing the reliability and capacity of the electrical system for future growth. The Mactaquac dam, now earmarked for a multibillion-dollar overhaul, will benefit from comprehensive engineering studies and regulatory consultations. The project will also involve First Nations groups to ensure that their interests and concerns are addressed throughout the planning process.Federal Strategy for Infrastructure and Energy SecurityThe loan and additional funding are part of Ottawa's broader strategy to strengthen Canada's infrastructure. By upgrading the hydroelectric dam and related grid assets, the federal government aims to support economic development and improve energy security across the region. NB Power's commitment to extend the life of the dam is expected to preserve vital renewable energy generation and reduce the need for new, potentially costly energy projects in the future. The Canadian Press reports that the new funding will enable New Brunswick to meet long-term energy demands while safeguarding an important heritage site and maintaining the stability of the provincial power network. The project will also include close collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to ensure the upgrades meet environmental and social standards. With the additional investment, New Brunswick will continue to play a significant role in Canada's renewable energy mix and in promoting sustainable development in the region. The intake structure, powerhouse and main spillway of the Mactaquac generating station were shown in a 2016 Canadian Press photograph by James West. The station remains a central asset for the province's electricity system as planning for the overhaul moves forward.
