The film, officially titled Thrash, is scheduled to debut exclusively on Netflix on Friday, April 10, 2026. The streaming service officially confirmed this release date in March, accompanying the announcement with a new trailer.

The plot centers on a coastal community devastated by a Category 5 hurricane, resulting in widespread flooding. As residents fight to survive the rising waters, their struggle is compounded by the arrival of a school of hungry sharks dragged in by the storm surge.

Initially, Sony Pictures, one of the production companies involved, had intended for Thrash to receive a theatrical release. However, those cinema plans were canceled earlier this year in favor of a direct-to-streaming debut on Netflix.

The movie underwent several title changes during development. It was first known as Beneath the Storm, then briefly renamed Shiver. After Sony transferred the distribution rights to Netflix, the final title was settled upon as Thrash.

Producer Adam McKay shared his long-standing fascination with the subject matter. McKay stated that he has been obsessed with sharks since he was nine years old.

McKay admitted that adding a shark movie to his filmography made him feel “a little more complete.” He attributed this to the inherent nature of the creatures, explaining, “It’s that primal fear. It’s that awe of any apex predator.”
