A special broadcast of '20/20' and its accompanying podcast, '20/20: The After Show' hosted by Deborah Roberts, recently revisited the tragic shooting of a mother in Atlanta, Georgia. The case, originally occurring on June 2, 2023, was examined in detail on April 3, 2026, on ABC and Hulu.
The Fatal Incident
Pamela Dias received devastating news on June 2, 2023: her daughter had been fatally shot by a neighbor. This occurred shortly before Dias was set to begin a new career as a flight attendant, fulfilling her dream of traveling the world.
Long-Standing Dispute
The shooting stemmed from a prolonged dispute between the victim, Owens, and her neighbor, Susan Lorincz. The conflict began in February 2022, with Lorincz repeatedly contacting the police to report concerns about the activities of Owens and other children in the neighborhood.
Neighbors confirmed that Lorincz was the primary complainant to authorities. Body camera footage showed sheriff’s deputies were aware of Lorincz as a source of ongoing issues within the community. Lorincz stated she worked from home and was disturbed by noise from the children.
The Day of the Shooting
On the day of the incident, Owens confronted Lorincz after her son reported being yelled at and having roller skates thrown at him by Lorincz – an act Lorincz admitted to. Tragically, Lorincz shot Owens through her locked front door while Owens stood near her nine-year-old son, Israel.
Kemisha Mobley, a 911 operator, and Lauren Smith, a neighbor who attempted CPR, recounted the harrowing scene and its impact on the community.
Allegations of Racial Bias
The investigation revealed escalating tensions and evidence suggesting racially charged behavior by Lorincz. Body camera footage included claims from children that Lorincz had used racial slurs and derogatory language towards them.
Nevaeh, a neighbor’s daughter, specifically recounted instances of Lorincz allegedly using racial slurs. Lorincz admitted to such conduct in a police report. The release of this footage sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Legal Proceedings
Despite demands for hate crime charges, the state attorney determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue them. Lorincz was arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm and was held on bond.
