'What has happened is that we have not had the management, we've not had the marketing, and so you have not had the results and production,' Mayor Steven Reed said. The perception right now is that Montgomery Whitewater is down, which we are, but just because you're down doesn't mean you're out.Bobby Jon Drinkard Plans Spring Reopening'' Bobby Jon Drinkard, chairman of the Montgomery County Community Cooperative District Board, said the plan is to go back to the drawing board and reopen next spring. 'We had maintenance issues here at the park that were deferred maintenance over a long period of time that needed to be addressed. We were bleeding money, um, and we weren't making any money. Taxpayers should not have to carry that on their backs. All right. It's time to fix it. And that's what we're doing. Trying to be responsible,' Drinkard said.Charlotte Whitewater Advises MontgomeryNorth Carolina's Whitewater Charlotte is the only other totally man-made rafting course in the country. It is now on board as an advisor to help Montgomery develop a new operating model.'Every single mistake that Montgomery Whitewater's made, they've made it. They've been there. They've done that. They are a highly profitable park,' Drinkard said.Mayor Reed Clarifies County ResponsibilityReed weighed in on the debate at a recent town hall meeting. He said while the city is committed to growing that part of town, it's the county that must take the lead.'So the city does not have any financial responsibility in Whitewater at this time, does not have any managerial or administrative responsibility in Whitewater at this time. And the city, it's not looking for that financial or administrative responsibility at this time,' Reed said.
