Mobile Airport Opening Postponed

The highly anticipated opening of Mobile’s new downtown airport has been delayed, with officials now targeting early 2027 for the first flights. While construction is almost complete, external factors have impacted the timeline for relocating flights from west Mobile to the downtown terminal at Brookley Aeroplex.

Factors Contributing to the Delay

Federal Shutdown Impact

Former Mobile Mayor and Airport Authority Chairman Sandy Stimpson explained that the recent federal shutdown played a role in the postponement. The shutdown hindered the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from approving the airport’s operational plans. “The federal shutdown had some impact, and what that did was that TSA wasn’t available to approve our plans,” Stimpson stated.

Airline Scheduling Considerations

Another factor influencing the decision is the timing of the opening. Airlines are unable to support the launch of a new terminal during the busy peak holiday travel season. Stimpson emphasized, “Well you cant open it without either one of those.”

Project Status and Budget

Despite the delay, the airport project remains approximately $20 million under budget. Stimpson anticipates that these funds will be allocated to enhance the airport’s design, incorporating elements that reflect Mobile’s unique culture and identity.

Focus on Customer Experience

Stimpson stressed the importance of a flawless launch, stating, “There’s no soft opening for an airport. It’s got to be right.” He added that the airport authority aims to provide a “first class customer experience” from day one, ensuring all aspects of the operation are fully prepared.

Future Updates and Staffing

A more precise opening date is expected to be determined during the Mobile Airport Authority’s board meeting next month. Stimpson confirmed he is not interested in taking on a role in the airport’s operation, expressing satisfaction with his current position.

Former Airport Authority Director Andy Wilson, who resigned in March, continues to provide support and assistance to facilitate the airport’s opening.
