Lawyers Request Release of Ratko Mladic

The legal team representing convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic has formally requested his provisional release from a life sentence in The Hague. This request is based on severe health issues experienced by Mladic following a stroke.

Mladic's Conviction and Health Condition

Ratko Mladic, 84, was convicted of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and other war crimes committed during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). His lawyers state that he suffered a stroke in April, resulting in total aphasia and difficulty swallowing.

Stroke Details and Family Confirmation

Mladic’s son, Darko, confirmed the stroke through a UN-authorised doctor, initially describing it as a “silent (minor) stroke.” However, his father’s condition has since worsened, according to his legal team. They argue his condition is life-threatening and requires treatment in Serbia.

The Srebrenica Massacre and Mladic's Legacy

Mladic is known as the ‘Butcher of Bosnia’ for his actions during the Bosnian War. He was convicted in 2017, with the conviction upheld on appeal in 2021. The Srebrenica massacre, where approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were executed, was the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.

Ongoing Controversy and Regional Tensions

Despite his conviction, Mladic remains a controversial figure, with some in Serbia still viewing him as a national hero. Bosnian Serb officials continue to downplay or deny the Srebrenica genocide, contributing to ongoing tensions in the region.

Opposition to Release and Court Decision

Survivors and victims’ associations vehemently oppose Mladic’s potential release, fearing it would undermine justice and send a message of impunity. His defence team maintains that his health is rapidly declining and he requires specialized medical care unavailable in the prison hospital.

The court’s decision on his release is currently pending, and international observers are closely monitoring the case for its implications on justice and reconciliation in the Balkans.
