Tragic Murder-Suicide in Minnesota
A 3-year-old boy was killed by his father in a murder-suicide at their home in Holmesville Township, Minnesota, according to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.
Discovery and Initial Investigation
On Monday, March 30, a man discovered his brother, 45-year-old Gene Russell Bartnes, deceased at his residence. The brother went to check on Gene after he failed to report to work, authorities stated. He subsequently contacted law enforcement.
Confirmation of Deaths
Becker County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home and found both Gene Bartnes and his son, 3-year-old Koltyn Wayne Bartnes, dead. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined Koltyn’s cause of death to be homicide and Gene Bartnes’ death a suicide.
Mother's Reaction and Community Support
Koltyn’s mother, Kristi Frazier, described her reaction to the news to KVLY-TV, stating she “stood up, and just fell.” Frazier also revealed that Gene had written three suicide notes, which she has chosen not to read due to the ongoing investigation.
GoFundMe Campaign
A GoFundMe page was created by Tabitha Stinar to support Kristi Frazier. The page reads, “Our hearts are shattered as we share the unimaginable loss of a beautiful 3-year-old boy.” It further describes Frazier as a beloved daycare provider and a “second mom” to many children in the community.
Ongoing Investigation and Resources
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the incident. Anyone experiencing emotional distress or considering suicide is encouraged to reach out for help.
