Investigators in Louisiana have seized hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine from an ice cream truck being towed on an interstate highway. The discovery was announced during a press conference detailing multiple significant drug busts in the region.
Large Methamphetamine Seizure
Authorities reported that two Mexican nationals were towing the ice cream truck when investigators found over 300 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within the vehicle. This seizure represents a substantial amount of the drug being kept off the streets.
Broader Impact of Drug Busts
The methamphetamine discovery was part of a larger series of operations. An unrelated traffic stop resulted in the seizure of 15 kilograms of cocaine. Additionally, investigators found 220 pounds of cocaine hidden in a compartment within an 18-wheeler.
Statements from Law Enforcement
Zachary Keller, an attorney involved in the cases, expressed frustration with the prevalence of drugs, stating, “We all myself, probably you, probably your viewers, all have somebody in their lives whose lives have been affected, have been ended, have been ruined by these drugs, and we are sick of it.”
DEA Special Agent in Charge Steven Hofer emphasized the financial impact on criminal organizations, saying, “When we seize this amount of drugs we are cutting into the cartels' bottom line and stopping the flow of this poison before it reaches our neighbors.”
FBI New Orleans Field Office Special Agent in Charge Johnathan Tapp described the busts as “a major blow to these criminal organizations.”
Additional Charges
In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly attempting to push a stranger into the path of an oncoming light rail train. This incident is unrelated to the drug seizures.
