Micaela Erlanger on Styling Meryl Streep for 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' Press Tour
Meryl Streep's longtime stylist, Micaela Erlanger, described the upcoming press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2 as "very authentic, considered, and full-on fashion." Erlanger first connected deeply with the original 2006 film while interning at Condé Nast, the publisher of magazines like Vogue.
"The movie really pulled back the curtain on fashion, and totally changed how people understand the industry," Erlanger noted. She added that it feels like "full circle" to now be styling Streep for the sequel, which is set for release on May 1.
Kicking Off the Fashion Blitz
The promotional tour officially commenced in Mexico City, with subsequent premieres scheduled for London, New York, and East Asia in the coming weeks. Erlanger anticipates this tour will feature the most fashion-forward looks Streep has ever worn during a promotional cycle.
For Streep's inaugural appearance, she wore a striking red suit by Dolce & Gabbana, accented with brooches from her personal collection. This was followed by a floor-length, buttoned-up Schiaparelli gown.
Strategic Styling: Meryl vs. Miranda
Erlanger, who has collaborated with Streep for 11 years, emphasized that the styling strategy balances honoring the original film while showcasing evolution. The initial red ensemble included custom accessories, such as an Olympia Le-Tan book clutch and red pitchfork-heeled stilettos mirroring the new movie poster.
The goal was not to recreate Miranda Priestly but to dress Meryl Streep as the powerful, realized woman she is today. Erlanger stated, "We wanted to have a wink and a nod to the original movie, but it’s also about evolution."
The Wardrobe Blueprint
The planning focused heavily on silhouettes, favoring tailoring chosen for impeccable fit and conviction. Erlanger aimed for a "fierce, powerful editrix energy," incorporating defined shoulders and bold accessories, perhaps even a touch of leopard print, while maintaining Streep's inherent femininity.
The tour will feature upwards of 30 distinct looks, including numerous custom pieces created specifically for Streep. Erlanger called collaborating with design houses on one-of-a-kind looks a major professional joy, confirming that "the devil wears lots of designers."
Vintage Flair and High Stakes Accessories
The wardrobe will also incorporate vintage elements sourced globally by Erlanger, who values the unique quality of one-of-a-kind vintage items. Accessories will feature more archival treasures and experimentation with Streep's signature eyewear, complemented by striking jewelry.
Erlanger acknowledged the immense scrutiny, admitting, "The pressure is on. There’s absolutely zero room for error." She confirmed conversations with fellow stylists Erin Walsh and Jessica Paster, but stressed the importance of remaining authentic to Streep's sensibilities.
Ultimately, Erlanger promised fans a satisfying yet surprising experience: "We’re going to give the fans what they want, but it’s going to be totally unexpected."
