A Mid-Life Refresh for the Flagship SUV
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a comprehensive update for the third-generation GLS, marking the second revision since the SUV's 2019 launch. The vehicle continues to be available in both five and seven-seat configurations, incorporating significant design changes both inside and out.
Interior Overhaul and Technology Upgrades
The cabin has undergone a heavy redesign, drawing significant inspiration from the recent S-Class update. Rear-seat passengers now benefit from a pair of 11.2-inch touchscreens, which allow for movie streaming and video conferencing. Additionally, new iPhone-style controllers enable occupants to adjust seating, manage infotainment, operate blinds, and customize ambient lighting.
Front Cabin Enhancements
Up front, the dashboard now features the expansive Superscreen as standard equipment, alongside an 18-inch augmented-reality head-up display. The steering wheel has also been updated to include physical rocker controls. For seven-seat models, the second-row bench can now be moved electronically to provide extra legroom for third-row passengers.
Exterior Refinements
Externally, the GLS mirrors the styling cues of the updated GLE. The front end has been revised with a new bumper, grille, and headlight design. Notably, models equipped with the AMG Line trim feature an illuminated grille, and buyers can now opt for exclusive 23-inch wheels.
Performance and Powertrain Options
The updated lineup includes several engine configurations:
- 350d: A 308bhp straight-six diesel engine.
- 450: The updated 'M256 Evo' 3.0-litre turbo petrol straight-six, producing 375bhp—an increase of 74bhp over the previous version.
- 580: A 530bhp 4.0-litre V8 turbo petrol engine, capable of 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds.
Unlike the GLE, the GLS will not offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain. While an AMG 53 variant is not planned, an updated version of the high-performance AMG GLS 63 is expected to arrive later this year.
Availability and Pricing
Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced official pricing, though costs are expected to rise above the current £110,800 starting point. The refreshed GLS is scheduled to go on sale later this year.
